Visit to Maggie’s Lanarkshire

In Memory of Roberto Equi
Last week, David and Alex Equi visited the Maggie’s Lanarkshire centre to mark a very personal milestone—our fourth year supporting Maggie’s by funding a full day of the centre’s operations in memory of Roberto Equi, who passed away from cancer 30 years ago.
This year also marks what would have been Roberto’s 90th birthday. A second-generation family member in the Equi’s story, Roberto played a huge role in building the foundations of our business. He was a proud, principled man with a love for people, community, and—of course—ice cream. While he never sought the spotlight, his values and work ethic continue to guide everything we do.

When Roberto passed away in 1994, Maggie’s Centres did not yet exist. It’s something we’ve often reflected on, especially after seeing first-hand the difference these centres now make to families facing a cancer diagnosis. That’s why, in 2021, we pledged £12,000 over five years to support Maggie’s Lanarkshire – our local centre, just minutes from our factory—by paying for one full day of its operation each year.
Maggie’s offers practical, emotional and psychological support to anyone affected by cancer – patients, families, and friends. That includes one-to-one support with cancer specialists, bereavement counselling, stress-management workshops, benefits advice, and a warm, welcoming space to simply talk and be heard.
During their visit, David and Alex spent time with some of the centre’s visitors – people currently undergoing treatment, family members of those affected, and others who previously leaned on Maggie’s and now volunteer or fundraise to give back. It was a moving reminder of the impact this charity has on our community and just how vital their support is.
Maggie’s remains Equi’s official charity partner, a cause very close to our hearts. We’re incredibly proud to support them – not only in Roberto’s memory, but also for every family in Lanarkshire who needs a place like Maggie’s to turn to.
